HOUSING SHORTAGE.
INSTANCE IN WELLINGTON.
PRIME MINISTER'S ADVICE.
" I sa\v s a man to-day who told me he was the head of one of three families that were living in one house out in the suburbs," said the Prime Minister on Saturday at the opening of the Y.M.C.A. Hostel in Wellington. He said that six members of a family lived in one room. "This is a shocking state of things, but *1 believe that we are overtaking the trouble. Some considerable time may elapse before we have all the houses that are needed by the population, but the number of houses is being increased gradually. I recognise that the Government and the people ought to do everything possible to help in such cases." Mr. Massey added that he would advise every young fellow, in these days of high wages and salaries, to set about the provision of a home in anticipation of the days when he would be the head of a family. The young man ought to make provision for the future, and realise that the time to save some money was before he became responsible for the maintenance of a family. It was better to bo a landlord than a rentpayer.
