\ SOCIAL NEWS. Miss Muriel Kings-well is paving a round of visits in the South. Miss Butts, of Wellington, is coming to Auckland for Christmas. Mr. mid Mrs. C. A. Brown are spending Christmas at Mon Desir. Mrs. H. A. Holl has pone to the Waitakcre Ranges for a couple of monthsMr. and Mrs. Higgins, of Wellington, are at present staying at- the Grand Hotel. The Misses Madge and Jewel Higgins, rf Napier, are staying at Arundel, Auckland. Mrs. TJandvside and her two sons have gone to Takapuna for the summer vacat ion. Mrs. Dranf field and Tier sister. Miss Martin, intend paying a short visit to 1 e Aroha.. Miss Olga Abbott, of Wellington, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. R. Abbott, of Epsom. Mr and Mrs. H. OilfiUan, who have been staving at Mon Desir, have returned to town. Mr. and Mrs. E. Morton are motoring through to Taupo, where they will sta> for the holidays. Mr. and Mrs J. R. Reed and Mrs. Niccol are leaving town this week on a motor trip to Wairakei. Mrs. Duthie and Miss Duthie, of Wel" lington, will spend Christmas with Mrs. W. N. Abbott, Epsom. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Studholme, and the Misses Studholme, have left Christchurch on a visit to Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. Vivian Riddiford, of Wellington. are shortly leaving for Auckland, where they will spend Christmas. Miss G. A. Shepherd, who has been the guest of Mrs. E. D. O'Rorke in Christchwch, has returned to Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. Marsack, who have been visiting Mrs. limes, in Palmerston North, returned to Auckland at the end of last week. Mrs. and Miss Hudl-eston, who have been staying with Mrs. R- Reynolds at Trecame. Cambridge, have returned to Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. W. Elliott, Mr. and Mrs. Felix Kelly, and Mr. and Galway a.re spending Christmas and the New Year at Rotorua. Mr. and Mrs. E-dward Turner (nee Miss Edna. Walker) arrived by the Riverina and aJ"e the guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Walker, Epsom. Mrs. E. Sutherland and Miss Sutherland left town on Sunday night for Hastings, where they will be the guests of Mrs. Sanderson, Glenross.

Miss N. Hanna, accompanied by Mr. A. Hruma and Mr. S. Hanna, are going South for Christmas and will pay a visit to the Cold Lake District. An enjoyable concert in aid of Dr. Barnardo's Homes, was held at Stonehurst, Svmonds Street, the proceeds totalling £20. Miss Bathie Stewart contributed a number of Maori songs, violin soles were given by Miss Ava Symons and Miss Kathleen. Speed, pianoforte solos by Miss Muriel Frost and Miss Viola Speed, musical monologues by Miss Linda. Green, and vocal items by Miss Pauline Fox and Mr. E. Brassey. Mr. Jolly Thomas, after proposing a vote of thanks to the artists, gave a reading of Scrooge, from Dickens' " Christmas Carols."

■ Thfl Christmas season this year should prove an unusually gay one, as no doubt the races and the Davis Cup contest will attract a very large number ok visitors to Auckland. An innovation in the round of social festivities is a Jazz Cabaret, which should prove a distinctly novel form of entertainment. The continental idea of cafe and ballroom combined is to be put into practice, and Aucklanders on pleasure bent will be able to jazz and sup under conditions that will establish quite a new era in entertainment here.

A very pleasing function took place at. the Myers' Kindergarten on 'Friday evening, when the diplomas won during! the year were presented to the students. Mr. Murray, vice-president of the Kindergarten Association, in making the.presentations, referred to the great work entrusted to those who were training young child nature. Students who received diplomas were:—Miss Eileen Abbott and Miss Edith Patton, who had won distinction; Miss Una Perkins, Miss Eva Yincent, and Miss Alice Wilson. An enjoyable programme of kindergarten songs and recitations was contributed by the students, who afterwards, with Miss Gibson, entertained the guests at a light supper.

A large number of the members of the Y.Si.C.A. and Y.W.C.A. met on' Sunday, December 19, to hold a united Christmas carol service at. the Y.W.C.A. building in Upper Queen Street. Mr. C. J. Tunks, president of the Y.M.C.A., was in the chair, and Miss Griffin, M.A., on behalf of the Y.W.C.A., welcomed the visitors. A Christmas address was delivered' by the Rev. Gordon .Bell, M.A., of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and Miss Muriel Barr rendered the solo, " And He shall feed His flock.'' After the service the majority of those present adjourned to the cafeteria for a special Christmas tea, returning later to the hali to sing carols and Chrismas hymns under the leadership of Sir. Mills.

Melmerly College, Parnell, was the scene of a very successful breaking-up last Friday evening, when there was a large and appreciative audience. The schoolroom looked charming, the decoration of the stage, with its little pagoda, having been most effectively carried out by Mr. H. , Goldie. Coloured footlights further enhanced the effect. Archdeacon Mac Murray and the new vicar, the Rev. P. James, was also on the platform. The archdeacon, in a happy little speech, commented on the 29 years during which he had visited the school, and expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the new vicar for continuing his work. The pupils then • presented an attractive programme, the first part of which consisted of carols, recitations, songs, and dances, and the second of selections from " Much Ado About Nothing." Tiie engagement is announced of Miss Bella second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Craig, of Manurewa, to Mr. Harry R. Grey, second son of Mrs. Walter Grey, of Manurewa, late of Devonport. lhe engagement is announced of Miss Mary Smith, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. B.
