STEAMER STRIKES WHARF.
DAMAGE TOTALS ABOUT £2000. [FROM OCR OWN < CORRESFONDIQiT.] SUVA (Fiji), Dec. 14. The steamer ToriUa, winch arrived here on Saturday to take some 2000 Indian coolies to India, created a sensation hy ramming the new wharf bow-on, and cutting into it like cheese for 25i't. Although her engines were reversed, she only brought up when her stem got up against the wall of No. 1 Customs shed, and incidentally shifted the wall 3ft. back. She then quietly backed out, and was tied up to the wharf. The damage will reach nearly £2000. The vessel has a few bolts burst and a plate or two above water dented, but her stem hardly shows a trace of the collision. The huge stringers were crushed into matchwood.
