AMERICAN LINES ALARMED.

Not. 20 A message from Seattle stales that the •! question of peace or war over the Pacific I west-bound freight rates will be decided j at a meeting on Saturday af the reprei sentatives of leading shipowners. The American lines are alarmed at the action of the British and Japanese in cut- | ting the Oriental rates for flour and lumj ber. The Americans also declare that the j Canadian lines plan to reduce flour rates ! for the purpose of underselling. Mx. Haines, vice-president of the Pacific I Steamship Company, declares that the j conference must end in an agreement, ior it will be war to the knife. "Are we j to tie up our vessels or allow foreigners I to carry our freight." he says, and asserts; j that the British have already captured the j grain-carrying trade from "the Columbia River. _. 1
