BRAVERY WORTH £8000.
| TOUCHING APPEALS FOB D.C.M. | Having previously pleaded guilty at the I Old Bailey, Herbert Souster, a clerk, was brought up for sentence on charges of ob» , taining cheques by false pretences, ' arid falsification of the books of his employers, Messrs. Cohen, Laming and Hoare, stockbrokers. , It was alleged that he. entered into a number of transactions on ' behalf of two of his relatives. Shares were bo tight for them and were, represented by him to have been sold at a higher price than they really were. In consequence the firm suffered a loss amounting to something like £9000. Restitution had been made to the extent of over £6000. On his behalf it was said that he had a magnificent war record. He gained the J). CM., was wounded three times, and lost an arm. His discharge papers were marked " a very brave man." One of the partners of the firm had made a strong and touching appeal, saying such a brave man was cheap at £8000. Souster had been in'custody for four months. It was a serious fraud, said the recorder, but in all the circumstances he felt he was justified in passing a sentence of six weeks and one day, which would mean immediate discharge.
