"A VERY STUPID ACTION."

YOUNG WOMAN IN COURT. [EI TELECKArH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Wednesday. A young woman named Margaret Elizabeth Maud Vickers came up fop sentence before Sir Robert Stout at the Supreme Court, Hamilton, to-day, on a charge of making a, false declaration to the effect urn she posted a certain packet at Pukekara on a recent date. Mr. E. H North croft, representing the accused, pleaded that she was an innocent county girl who, when she signed the declaration, did not understand its full significance As a matter of fact she was in her present position as a result of an endeavour to shield her younger sister, who actually posted th» letter. In rural districts like Pakekura letters were posted in. open bores .at the farm gates, and there awaited collection by the mailman, so that anyone could by merely j lifting the lid, extract any packet posted therein. When the accused actually mad* the declaration she did not realise the distinction between actually posting and causing to-be posted Misf Honor told the accused 'that she had done a very stupid thing. However, he did not. think the offence was one which warranted sending 3 her to gaol or even patting her on probation. He would order her to come up far sentence if called upon within three months. «««u
