YACHTING.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

The Victoria. Cruising Club -was favoured with good weather last Saturday for its first series of class races. Large entries were received for all classes, and all but three of the boats faced the starter. The racing was interesting, and in a number of the events the- finishes were very* close, seconds alone separating many of the competitors. In one or two of the races a misunderstanding arose among a number of the competitors over the position of the starting line, with the result that they started on the wrong side of the line, and consequently lost time I in returning and crossing on the correct side. i The mistake was brought about through the , starting instructions not being definite enough. The only directions given were that I the various classes would start at the times allotted from off the flagship and a markboat In this case a dredge was used as the mark-boat the club flag being flown at the °° - The majority of the boat 3 started from between these two marks, but a number of others crossed the line on the other side of the flagship. A recurrence of the difficulty can be avoided by giving the position the mark-boat will be moored from the flagship. The big keel yacht Waitangi, which arrived trom Wellington last Saturday, is to have extensive alterations and improvements carried out to her cabin, and when these are completed she will rank with Auckland's crack yachts.
