TEAMS ON MONDAY.

NARROW COAL MARGIN.

FURTHER STOPPAGE POSSIBLE

MAYOR POSITION.

Though the trams will resume running on Monday it will only be possible for the service to be ■ permanently maintained by the receipt of greater quantities, of , coal than have been coming to hand of late. The Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, stated yesterday that the decision of the Public Services Committee" of the City Council to resume the service on the date .n-jritioued, had been largely influenced by the inconvenience to the community, and the economic loss resulting from the stoppage of the trains. The stocks of coal at the power-house were not as large as it was expected they would be at. this date.' On Monday, when the cars started, there would be less than a week's- supply on hand. A shipment of coal for the - City Council, from Newcastle,' was expected in about a week. If this arrived as expected, and the coal deliveries .from the Waikato mines were continued, ■ the committee would be able, by -a - close margin,•- to maintain the • service.

The Mayor added " that the ' public must not- be too sanguine about the ability of the committee to keep the trams running. The position was exactly as he had stated, and 'there was'some risk of a further stoppaee by starting the v service on Monday. The risk was being taken in the interests of the community, and the position was being - explained . in order to prevent misunderstandings arising. The Public Services Committee was responsible for. the maintenance of the city electrical service, and if the coal supplies continued to be as short as they were at present the electrical station would still receive preference.
