DENTAL BURSARIES.
STATEMENT BY UNIVERSITY. (BT TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNBDIN. Friday. The Minister for Education. is reported as having stated in the House of Representatives yesterday that dental bursars were chosen entirely by the university, whereas it is pointed out by the university authorities that the regulation m force (No. 2) states as follows:— are to make application to the authorities of the Otago University, who will forward their recommendations through the chief health officer to the Minister for Public Health for final approval." The Minister also inferred that the geographical distribution of 'bursaries was unequal. This largely rests with the applicants themselves. Applicants from Auckland certainly have more chance of obtaining bursaries than Dunedin students. for»the nidations state: "Bursaries will not be conferred »upon candidates who reside in Dunedin." As a matter of fact two bursaries have been offered to Auckland students recently who have refused them. Another Auckland student holds an Otago dental bursary, and yet another Auckland student is being assisted by the Otago Repatriation Department, and also holds a National War Fund bursary. It seems to be evident that if more bursaries are not held by Auckland students it. is at least not the fault of the university. As regards advertising the bursaries for the past two years, every possible candidate, about 1500, has been circularised and full particulars placed before him, and this will be repeated this year. The Minister has been asked to open bursaries to Dunedin students, and also to provide 20 per annum instead of 10 as' in the past, and it is hoped that these requests will be granted.
