SALARIES OF MASTERS.

In the Arbitration Court, Mr. Justice Hicgins made his final award in the dispute between the Merchant Service Guild and the Commonwealth Steamship Owners' Association. He fixed the salaries of masters of seagoing passenger vessels at £30 10s to £80 a month, and the salaries of masters of non-passenger seagoing vessels at £26 2s to £55. Masters and engineers of steamers engaged in inside waters were awarded £5 10* to £7 10? a week. In ail cases salaries are graduated according to tonnage. The award is to operate from October i. Mr. Justice Higgins refused to grant a request to make the award retrospective from April.
