MR. GOMPERS DENOUNCES WHISKY.

Mr. Samuel Gompers, president of the ] American Federation of Labour, a . close ally of the Liquor Trade in America, on June 14, 1919, told the committee on the judiciary of the U.S. Senate that: "No one with whom I am acquainted, or of whom I know, will defend whisky-drink-ing-—the drinking of spirituous liquors— and whether that was secured by legislation, or by constitutional amendment, or whether it has been brought about by a better self-control of the people, is immaterial. The fact is that there is scarcely a division of opinion that the elimination of spirituous liquor from our lives in America has been a wise and a practical contribution to a bettej life."
