The annual meeting of the Northern Athletic Union, held at Te Aroha, was well attended by representatives of clubs" from Hikutaia to Putaruru. The president. Mr. Robert Coulter, presided. The.' annual report showed that organising work had been done in an endeavour to bring the controlling body of cash athletics back to its pre-war standard. The year, -ended ' with a credit balance of-£ll 4s 7d.~ It was decided that Te Axdha. shall; be the; union's headquarters for the ensuing year". The election of officers, for the present year resulted:—President, Mr. J&.. Coulter ;vicepresidents; Messrs. Barr'-Browri (Putaruru) and L. G. Hill (Hikutaia); 'auditor, Mr. J. J. Harbidge .;-, hem. solicitor, Mr. A. T. Jaines; hon. organiser, Mr. FretTT A. Walker; secretary -and treasurer, Mr. J. L. Harris (Te Aroha); members of executive council, Messrs. P. Pilkirigton, Jas. Parkinson, and^SS,Vernon'(Te Aroha), W. Shannon (Springdale), W. J. Naughtori (Hikutaia), J. Elliot (Newmarket), and TV. R. S. Johnson (Thames)s. official handicap-' * pers, Messrs. G. Morrison, Te Aroha (athletics), and C. R. Hardy, Poasonby (chopping). The following consuls were appointed —Messrs. Mearns (Waiuku). Cranston (Matangi), Johnson (Piopio), Mills (Papakura), Bennett (Raupo), Abbott (Tuakau), . Pettit (Mamaku), W. Byrne (Paeroa), Cornthwaite (Bombay),,- Lock (Tangiteroria), Dawson (Victoria Valley), and Snowden (Hoanga). The ._. Mauku Athletic Club was granted a permit to hold sports on January 1. Messrs. E- C. Banks and A. Burns, representing the Auckland Board of Education, have been visiting the district officially. At Te Aroha they were shown over the proposed site fi>r a new school, and urged to induce the board to acquire six or seven acres at once. They were also asked for a school at Hemesville, about one mile and a-half from the Te Aroha school. Both requests will ~bfe" favourably" recommended. At Waitoa Mr. Banks was asked to obtain a site at the corner of the Waitoa-Matamata Road for a new school, and to sell the old site and building thereon, which is totally inadequate for the needs of the district, .' M& ' Banks acceded, and said he would have arrangements made to accommodate some of the classes in the public hall as a temporary relief. He hoped a -new and'more commodious structure would be available for use after Christmas.
The rainfall at Te Aroha last month was 4.07 inches, and at Springda!e 4.53 inches. Rain fell on 10 days during the month, the heaviest fall being on the 10th and 13th. Vital statistics for September- are: — Births, 15; marriages, 3; death, 1. For the quarter the totals are 42, 9, and 9, respectively. The local tourist agent, Mr. G. F. McGirr, who has been at Howiek for two or three months, has "resumed his duties. Mr Jervis, who has been relieving here, Has let for similar duties at Rotnrua, after, which lie returns to the head office m Wel-lir-gtoii. A deputation from the local Chamber of Commerce waited on the Borough Council at its last meeting urging coration in pressing for the dredging of two or three shallow places in the Waihon River between Paeroa and Te Aroha. which hamper navigation, especially during the summer months. The deputation pointed out that there are two dredges on the river near Paeroa, under the control of the Public Works Department, aid that the smaller one could do the necessary dredging at very small cost. .All local bodies in the district are being asked to support the claim, as if not attended to at once there is.a grave danger of the river becoming useless for cargo traffic. On Saturday the Hunga Hunga Drainage Board resolved to support the request, and its representative on the Thames Valley Drainage Reference Board was instructed to urge that body to assist.
