WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU COUGH A cough is an explosive effort produced after a deep intake of air by suddenly opening the vocal chords against which air has been compressed. The outward rush of air carries with it any phlegm or other irritant which has collected in the trachea or windpipe. This lining of the trachea is very delicate, and is injured by repeated coughs. A soothing effect can be immediately obtained, however, by a dose of " Tussicura '•'—a favourite cough and cold remedy for years.
