TRADE WITHIN EMPIRE.

CANADA AND WEST INDIES. CONFERENCE AT OTTAWA. A. N.Z, OTTAWA, May 31 Welcoming the West Indian delegates to a conference called to discuss closer trade relations with Canada, the GovernorGenera] _ the Duke of Devonshire, pointed out that the real question at issue was that of making the future of the Empire secure. If the Empire were self-supporting, it? security would be unquestionable. Mr. L. C. M. S. Amery, representing the Colonial Office, emphasised the Imperial aspect of the conference. He hoped the outcome would be a widening of t!>o existing trade preference between the Dominion and the West Indies. Mr. E. St. John branch, AttorneyGeneral of Jamaica, said that that colony was prepared to enter whole-heartediv into any great scheme for the consolidation of the Empire. Representatives of' all the West Indian Islands were present.
