TWO NEW WOOLLEN MILLS.
WA-NGANUI AND WAIRARAPA
Addressing the annual conference or" the Wellington Provincial Farmers' Un'on, the president, Mr. G. L. Marshall, re--' ferred to the apparent disparity between the cost of raw wool and the or :-3 of manufactured clothing. "It seems that the time has come when we should try to manufacture more of our primary produck here, instead of exporting them ail in the raw state," he said. "Surely the time lias come when we should make ail tho blankets we require here instead of paying freight both ways and paying a high price for imported woollen goods. Many of us wonder hew it is that we have to pay about thirteen guineas for a suit of clothes when we know that we get onlv about ten shillings for the wool required to make the suit. How is the difference made up? It seems thai, <m enormous profit must be made in some of the processes that the wool goes through. A company is being floated in Wanganui to manufacture woollen goods, and I believe another company ft starting in the Wairarapa, so that evidently the 1 public is waking up to. the fact that it is i time we moved in this direction."
BACKWARD CHILDREN,
QUESTION OF EDUCATION.
Recently the Minister (or Education wad asked to establish a. class for backward children at Napier. _ Writing to Mr. J. V. Brown, M.P., the Eon. C. J. Parr says: " I have to elate that such a class would be considered only in connection with a general development of policy in this matter which the Department is not vet prepared to institute, one of the chief obstacles being the lack of suitable teachers. Later, when circumstances are more favourable, due consideration will be given to the provision of the necessary appropriation for the purpose, In the., meantime, sanction in any particular case except in connection with a training college must be delined."
