Nearly 100 new members have been enrolled by Ww society during the past few weeks, and everything points to a very successful f«ason. Afternoon tea was provided by the Ladies' Committee at tho gallery yesafternoon. §sg Several well-exccur-ed portraits appear fin the exhibition this year, the most ambitions being A. Elizabeth Kelly's •'.Day Dreams," a charming study or a young girl, notable for its I delicate colouring and fine treatment. W. B]S Bowring has several studies, the best I being hie portrait of Captain Hall Thompson, RN. The work of I. M. Copeland also stands out prominently in this section, while "A Breton Fisherman," by V. Cummings. and Rata Bird's "Head of a Voting Girl," are both good. Tho water--1 toloTT by A. 8. Boyd in the portrait seelion bis landscape*, and his picture, '•JoW. Grumlie's Wife Came Hame at E'en," show that art in Auckland ha» i been' greatly enriched by the arrival of this new exhibitor. v ; ' Among the oil paintings, Ethel Cauliers "Poplars," and G.' Woolley's winter flme, '"Hie Dell, Hornchurch," B. C i>obitj*s "Reflections," and a number of iUtractivt? local sketches by J. G. Eise Piill find many admirers. Cameron Johncon exhibits "the orJy west coast seajcape of anv importance shown this year ih "Paratutai Rock, Manukau Heads,' h' Amid & selection of water-colour landKapes of more than average excellence, • fa work of a few artists stands out proJ. M. Madden shows some fine sketches of the wild scenery of maintains and southern sounds, in which Ihe excels, w hDe W. Menzies Gibb contributes a number of autumn and river 1 studies, in which the delicate treatment of I water and skv, and the rich colouring of I foliage produce an effect of natural beauty -and harmony that is characteristic of all ;? this artist's work. Cecil P. Kelly i* a diligent worker, and has contributed 1 -this year a number of delightful sketches 1 of sandhill and sea, reproducing, as few I other artists are able to do, the subdued folonrings °* ocean-afte-'glow, the grey- | man of ocean rollers, and the smooth ;'-mocotony of the sandhills. Cdher artist* whose water-colours call for mention are M. 0. Stoddart, whose mfik is St"" 1 ? and original in treatment, I). K. Richmond and B. Eheney, whose I Jatdsrapeji show a fine grasp of technique ; md masterly conception of composition and cokrar. F. P. Worley exhibits a I EOTiber of sketches of French landscapes, : mi Essie Johnson several of the west ' coast, the best this artist has shown. The Wright brothers are represented as wial, W. Wright with 6omo more of the 'Maori .sketches with which Aucklanders ' are so laminar, and F. Wright with some .excellent landscapes, of which the best is " his peter* of To Henga. Mr. E.
