CONCLUSION OF BUSINESS.

THE ELECTION OF< OFFICERS. The twentieth annual provincial conferonce of the Farmers' Union concluded yesterday, sessions being held at the Town Hall concert chamber in the morning and afternoon. The president, Mr. J. Boddie, presided, and there was a large attendance of delegates. A- numbr of remits were considered, and the following wero adopted:—-

- "That more provision be insisted on for competent nursing and medical services in the outlying districts.". "That tho producers of tho Dominion Jake action in conjunction with the New Zealand and Imperial Government* and the co-operative companies in Britain, if necessary, to handle our products on tho British market*."

"That the Government be urged to push on with the promised immigration scheme."

That womon'B institutes be established in connection with the Farmers' Union as a meant; of encouraging better social conditions and as places where women immigrants could obtain a welcomo from New Zealand women."

Country Telephones. " That in respect to telephone party lines tho parties be re-arranged periodically, possib'e, to avoid overlapping, and thus, permit a redaction of charge?.'' "That a fiat rate bo charged to til country telephone subscribers, and that no profit bo made by the Department out. of party lines." "That farmers should take a hand in fixing the price of their produce." "That the Board of Trade be asked to investigate tho rapid rise in the price of manures.""

M In order to enable purely co-operative companies to permanently maintain the co-operative principle, they be given the, right to resume their own shares in the same manner as is provided in 'he Dairy Companies Act." Heed (or Afforestation. • " That the Government be urged 10 push forward afforestation, especially with regard to quick-growing trees, with a view to supplying the needs of the fruit and dairy industries on land unsuited for other purposes." "That the principle of compulsory military training be affirmed." < "That the conference urge upon the Government the necessity of instituting' some 'comprehensive system of national reading on lines similar to the Victorian system." " That the Minister for Agriculture De asked to purge the roll of registration ot brands »nd ear-marks." "That the conference support the returned soldiers' demand for the deportation of internees." "That the Noxious Weeds Act be amended to make it a practical proposition, and as such that it be enforced." " That the Government be requested to remove all protection from Californian quail, and encourage settlers to exterminate them." Ingredients of Manures. "That the Government be asked to compel manufacturers of manures to give the exact ingredients and analysis of manures." "That the conference protest against the action of magistrates in ordering undesirable characters to leave the cities and go to country districts, as such characters are a menace to country settlers, and should be committed for reformative treatment"

"That all bank notes of each deno- j mination be of uniform size." "That the executive lie urged to make inquiries into the possibilities of kauri spirit as a motor spirit, and that the Government bo requested to take similar action." " That in the opinion of the conference all drafts on wool sold or exported should be abolished, and that the executive bo instructed to take action forthwith to obtain their abolition." " That the banks be asked to reduce the exchange on single cheques of £10 and under to threepence." Light Railway Gauges. •"That steps be taken to amend the Local Railways Act so that narrow gauge light lines may bo built to suit local requirements." "That the Government Department concerned be asked to furnish a report as to who has derived the benefit from the difference caused by the commandeering ! of hides between the local prices and the world's parity." " That the Farmer' Union try to bring about an amalgamation of all bona-fide farmers' trading concerns. "That hydro-electric power be developed throughout tho Dominion." "That the Government be asked to rtipulata the amount of subsidy on proposed loans to local bodies for road work before polk are taken." A resolution recording appreciation of the services of the secretary, Mr. W. Hiley, and recommending an increase in his salary of £50 a year, was carried unanimously. Officers for Ensuing Year. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Mr. A. A. Rom; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. Keegan, C. K. Wilson ; executive, Messrs. R. D. Duifield, R. C. Allen. J. S Fisher, J. E. Makgill, A. E. Harding, H. 0. Mellsopp, F. Colbeck, C. C. Monro, S. 0. Jounncaux, L. H. MrAlpine, J. Trewin, W. H. Allen, and Major D. H. Lusk; delegate* to the Dominion Conference, Messrs. J. Boddie, C. K. Wilson, and A. E. Harding.
