• .•> > AMENDMENTS URGED. \ i. THE DOMINION MODEL. ' OA. and N.Z.-Reuter. LONDON. May 26 ' o A deputation of responsible people in- : , terestecr in tho settlement of the Irish . g problem interviewed the Acting-Chief , y Secretary, Mr. Walter Long, at the House " of Commons. It expressed its belief in the Government's good intentions, but asked for generous amendments of the Homo Rule Bill, by which' fundamental unity would be more clearly assorted. The deputation was of opinion that the Irish Parliament should include bicameral legislatures for both divisions of Ireland, J of which the Upper House of each should constitute together the Council of Irei. land, and be invested with wider unreserved powers than at present provided. v It suggested that the amount of the Irish 5. contribution to the Imperial Government ', bo left to the Irish Legislatures, as in tie case of the Dominions. The deputation suggested other alterations by which the status of Ireland would more closely resemble that of the Dominions. Mr, Long, replying, said that the Goternment's task was rendered more difficult through lack of criticism owing to | the absence of the Nationalists and the withdrawal of th* Labour members from the House of Commons. Referring to the i, increase of crime in Ireland, Mr. Long said that Englishmen were liable to regard concessions to these Irish opinions . as yielding to the forces of outrage. He '' undertook to submit the deputation's proJ posals to Cabinet.
