EDUCATION BOARD.
PHYSICAL TRAINING. FEMALE PUPIL TEACHERS. The Education Board met yesterday, Mr. E. C. Bfinks presiding. There were - I also present: Messrs. J. D. McKenzie, H. 8. W. K.ng, G. W. Murray, J. R. f Penning, A. Burns, Jas. Boddie, J. S. Bond, Dr. J. S. Reekie, and the Hon. G. J. Garland. Notice of motion -was given by Mr. Barns to alter the school holidays on acI count of the schools being closed owing Ito influenza, granting only one week's further holiday between now and Christ- | mas. ! Proposals for the physical training of female pupil-teachers and probationers submitted by the senior inspector were approved. The proposals provide for classes to be held on Saturday mornings. some time between nine and twelve o'clock, and to bo attended by all pupilteachers and probationers living within reach of Auckland, excepting those in their first year of service. Approval of a (suggestion from I hi, Parent-Teacher Association that quarterly conferences between school committees, householders, and teachers should be held, was contained in a letter from the Whajigarei committee. The Helensville committee reported that, while in sympathy with the movement, it considered it would be useless to endeavour to form an association at Helensville, owing to lack of parents' interest in school affairs. Tenders for the erection of a school building at Okahukura at £795, and for additions to school building at Waikumeto at £645, were accepted. A grant of £335 for the establishment of a school at Molesworth, -Mangawai, was notified by the Department. The supervisor of the manual and technical branch, Mr. J. P. Kalaugher, reported that the classes at the Hamilton day technical school were opened last Monday, three courses of instruction commercial, domestic science, and mechanical and workshop—having been arranged. The buildings consist of a main buildiii" containing ond class-room, one commercial class-room, a domestic room and science laboratory, and a workshops outbuilding containing woodwork and engineering shops. Notification of a grant of £150 for electrice.l equipment for the school was received from the Department. Authority was received for the purchase of approximately 14 acree at Paeroa for a Technical High School site. It was decided that a certificate of merit be granted to Mercer school for 1919 agriculture work. On the recommendation of the organ of domestic science, Miss Juniper, the » board passed a resolution impressing upon domestic science instructors the desirability of qualifying in first aid and home nursing, both of which subjects would be taken by students in compulsory continuation classes. It was therefore desirable that all teachers of cookery should attend courses of instruction under the auspices of St. John Ambulance Association, in .. .... order to qualify to take these classes.
