ADVANCES TO SOLDIERS.

CESSATION NOT PLANNED. PRIME MINISTER EXRLAINS. MERELY "SLOWING DOWN." IBT TELEGRAPHOWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. ilondsy. For the past two or three days ,there has been much concern among returned soldiers, caused by the' announcement made by 'the Hon. D. H. Guthrie that there would have to be a reduction or a complete stoppage in the granting of loans to soldiers for the purchase of property. - A deputation from the Returned Soldiers' Association waited on the Prime Minister to-day to discuss with him this prevailing idea that advances for the purpose of placing returned soldiers on the land or of finding homes for. them in the centres of population had been stopped or are about to be stopped. Mr. Massey explained that nothing of tho sort was intended, that it had become necessary merely to flow down, and that it was impossible for the Government to go on finding money at the rate of over £1,000,000 a month, as it had done for the past eight months. Mr. Massey said the Government would go on quite steadily, taking commitments first, and when the House met sufficient authority would be asked for and obtained to keep the department going.
