ASSAULT ON THE REMUERA.
STEWARD CUT WITH KNIVES.
ASSAILANT CONVICTED..
, A sequel to an affray on the Remuera on April 12, when the vessel was between Panama and Auckland, was heard in the Police Court, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., yesterday, when Frank Wheelwright, assistant steward (Mr. Meredith), was charged with having assaulted Charles Thomas Davenport, second steward, by cutting him on tho head and neck with some table-knives.
Davenport stated that he went into the first-class saloon and sent for Wheelwright and told him not to shirk his work or go back on his mates. The accused denied any neglect. -When witness was going away accused called him an offensive name. Witness wont back and found that Wheelwright had a number of knives in his hands. Witness struck at him, but missed, and accused then hit him with the knives on the head and neck. To Mr. Meredith! Accused was cleaning the knives. As the result of his wounds, witness was unable, to work for five days. Witness did not swear at accused.
Evidence was given that before Davenport was (truck with the knives ho struck accused a heavy blow with his fist. It woe also stated that both men used indecent language. The magistrate convicted the accused and discharged him.
