TROTTING.

■ —r » —— AUCKLAND CLUB, TO-DAY'S MEETING AT EPSOM. . The Auckland Trotting Club will bring their autumn meeting to a conclusion at Alexandra Park to-dav, and, with good acceptances a feature, there is every reason %a anticipate a capital afternoon's sport eventuating in the event of fine weather prevailing. A meeting of sportsmen closely identified with trotting was held last night at Buchanan's Rooms, when it was decided to form the North Island Owners, Breeders, and Trainers' Association. Representatives were present from Thames, Hamilton, Mornnsville, Cambridge, and Te Awamutu. The proceedings were characterised with much enthusiasm, the leading note being a. proper recognition of the North Island in the matter of totalisator permits, and a desire to work with the various clubs on terms of cordiality. Fifty members were elected. Mr. A. Lowe was elected president and Mr. T. Roe vjce-president, and a strong executive appointed-. NOTES BY PICADOR. The leading event decided at Alexandra Park on Saturday proved a good thing tor Partner, who was placed on the limit. When halt a mile had been compassed Partner ousted Lieutenant from the lead, and, trotting out the whole journey in attractive style, he won comfortably at the end in 4 n*- 375. which is to be accepted as his best performance to date. Lady Somerset, a smart six-year-old iaarg by Lord Heathcoto, made her debut at Alexandra Park on Saturday, and the manner in which she battled it out served to demonstrate in a pointed way that she possesses the Quality of gamenesa in a high degree, r.nty yardafrom the post Ruanui, on the inside, and Temple, on the outside, challenged in great style, and it looked as though the mare would succumb, but.- though both of her big rivals headed her slightly, she came again and just got up in time to win by a head. Gentle Ribbon, who was made a firm favourite in the minor trotting class at Alexandra Park on Saturday, is an aged gelding by Klblx>uwood—Tea Root, and hailed trotu Free Holmes' stable. He never went kind'y throughout. The second favourite. Mat Patch, hailed from Taranaki. He appeared to meet with a bad passage at different stages. Bon Bon is an improving trotter and showed some dash when he finished up second to Tiki in the Eden Trot Handicap last Saturday. The victory of Tiki among the maiden trotters on Saturday was said to be fully anticipated by her party. S. Groat has worked a deal of improvement in the daughter of Harold Dillon, who had her field long " before the business end was entered upon. The Gisborne pair, Ena Be':! and Wild Lad, displayed a deal of pace in their races on Saturday, but made up their handicaps too quickly to be expected to have much dash left tor the business end. No difficulty would be experienced in finding new owners tor the pair if they were for sale. Rangiatea Erua displayed a lot of gameness under pressure when h<? defeated Nita Bell for first honours in the Mangere Handicap. The Maori-named gelding was headed by Nita Be-'l, and at one stage of the straight the latter looked unbeatable, but Cameron's charge came again and deserved tho honours gained. Strategy's form was consistent at Alexandra Park last Saturday, and the son of Papanui certainly promises to be well supported in future engagements. He always looked Partner's most dangerous opponent in the principal event, and was credited with doing 4m 39 l-5s for the distanceWaverley was credited with covering .the two miles attached to tho Campbell Handicap on Saturday in 4m 37 4-5s when he finished fourth. when they entered on the final circuit he was moving nicely, but failed to maintain the pressure over the business end. Though Steel' Bell finished no nearer than fifth in the Campbell Handicap last Saturday, she was displaying some of her best speed in the closing stages, and, with tho advantage in handicap, quite a number of sportsmen expect the old grey mare to be prominent in to-day's two-mile engagement It may be that Gold Queen was not quite at home on the right-handed track at Alexandra Park last Saturday, for she never appeared to settle down, and finally finished last in the Campbell Handicap, though counting sufficient supporters to send her out second favourite. For her indifferent display the chestnut daughter of Kin* Cole has been extended every opportunity in the handicaps to-day. It is stated the victory of Lena Patch in the Easter Handicap on Saturday was we'! anticipated. The aged daughter of Dan Patch had to be kept hard at it to defeat Bluewood. who was timed to go 4m 46 4-os for the two miles. This caused the lattei to be made favourite again in the Stewards Trot, two races later on, but he was evidently feeling tho effects of his earlier struggle, and broke on two different occasions, which alone cost him the honours by a neck from Billy Parole. Wonderland failed to settle down kindls in either of his engagements on opening day white Hint was never dangerous from hi< back mark in the Stewards' Trot Handicap. Strategy sprung a surprise on the sup porters of God Girl and Eccentric when in led the pair home in 2m 14. l-5s to the mile That there was justification for the supporl accorded the pair mentioned was proved b} Cold Girl going 2m 13h and Eccentric 2rr 15 Ids. The pace displayed bv the place fillers should easily explain why Manukr Park and Bronze Patch dropped out of thi "lead in the middle stages. Prize Pearl soon made up his 36yds handi cap in the Marconi Handicap (saddle) or Saturday, and once R. Wood got him ir front he took no chances, nevertheless, Pnz< Pearl had to be kept going to keep A'iberl Patch off over the business end. Then was big money about for the winner. Before the present season is over the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club ha: made it known that they are out for i best-cm-record in the matter of stake-mone: so far as these lands are concerned, am by allotting £34.000 in stakes they have a one bound made an increase of £11,000 tr that important direction. A few years baci some people were inc.ined to shrug thei shoulders when it was mooted that the tin* was not far distant when Addington wouli prove a stiff rival to Riocarton. Such ii now m evidence, and with the New Zealanc Trotting Cup at Addington eclipsing th< New Zealand Cup at Riccarton in point o money value, the snort of trotting is brougn prominently into the limelight.
