MATTHEWS' MISFORTUNE.
I MACHINE A HOPELESS WRECK ; A. and N.Z. BATAVIA, April 19. A message from Weltervreden (Java) i states that Captain G. C. Matthews' mai chine is smashed beyond repair, and only the motor is intact. Captain Matthews states that he intends to give up the flight. His bodily condition is all right, but he is very depressed at being forced to give up the flight when the end was in sight. Sergeant Kay has one rib broken a,nd is severely bruised internally, but is • improving under a doctor's care. Both are being nursed at the home of a Dutch ' resident. The Dutch Commander-in-Chief I is sending an aviator to the island of Bali , to assist in dismantling the machine.
