THE RELEASED GERMANS.
LIBERTY TO TRADE.
RETURNED MEN'S COMPLAINT.
The question of Germans released from internment being allowed to trade where they like was brought before the executive of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association last evening by a letter from the Taihape Association. This stated that a German who had been released from internment had recommenced business in a King- Country town in opposition to a returned soldier who had been assisted by the Repatriation Department. The matter had been represented to the Minister for Internal Affairs, who had replied to the effect that Germans interned during the war were not necessarily dangerous in time of peace, that it would not bo practicable to deport all Germans who had been interned, as some of them were married to English women, and that it would not be consistent with the terms of peace to prevent those Germans who remained from carrying on trade. Inquiries were then made by the Taihape Association, which obtained the information that the German in question had a wife and family still residing in Germany, and that he had re-entered business with his pre-war stocks of jewellery, etc., and was able to sell them at a lower rate than the returned soldier could purchase goods for, and that the soldier had no chance of re-establishing himself unless the German was removed. This information had been forwarded to the Minister for Internal Affairs, who had replied that even in the special circumstances the Government had no power to act as the association desired.
It was decided to communicate with the headquarters of the association, supporting the view of the Taihape Association, and asking it to announce a policy in regard to Germans in trade.
it was stated that the Government had not replied to the communication from the Mayor of Auckland, conveying the resolutions on the subject of Germans and German trade passed at a public meeting held in the Town Hall on Janu ary 23.
