TENURE OF PASTORAL LANDS.
COMMISSION OF INQUIRY. The appointment of the Southern Pastoral Lands Commission is announced in the Gazette. The commission consists of Messrs. R. T. Sadd (Otago Commissioner of Crown Lands), W. B. Buckhurst, L. Cockayne, D. Jardine, R. Scott, A. Mclnnes, and C. Todd. Its task is to investigate the tenures of the pastoral Crown lands in Canterbury, Otago, and Southland, and determine if they are in the best interests of the State and of the tenants. The order of reference mentions the conditions of tenancy, the valuation of improvements, subdivision, the prevention of aggregation, the deterioration of grass lands and the methods of regrassing. the condition of the runs with regard to winter feed, the question of encouraging cultivation and the utilisation of water. The commission is to advise if the burning of tussock land is desirable, and, if so, in what circumstances. The report is to be completed not later than May 31.
