ST. PAUL'S TRAM SHELTER.
MEMORIAL TO THE FALLEN.
The stone trsm-shelter erected at Si: Paul's Church as a memorial to the men and women of the parish who gave their lives in the -war, is now practically completed, and the only work yet to be done is the setting of the stained glass windows. The shelter will accommodate about 14 people, and was designed by Mr. D. B. Patterson, and erected by Messrs. Trayes Brothers, follows closely' the architecture of St. Paul's Church. It is built of Bangitoto and Melbourne blue-stone, with dressings of Oamaru stone; a graceful Tudor arch surmounts the entrance, on which appears the inscription, " Remembering these dead, let the living be humble." On either side oi the entrance is a beautiful tablet of Pukekaroro trachyte, one bearing the names of the campaigns in which New Zealanders fought, and the other a memorial inscription to the fallen. Inside is an Oamarn stone frieze, engraved with the names of 25 battles fought by New Zealand men, and on the walls appear a number of polished stone tablets, inscribed with the names of the fallen. About 50 names already appear, and there are other tablets for additional names which may be sent in.
When completed, the shelter will have four stained glass windows, two bearing the arms of the diocese, and memorial inscriptions in honour of church worshippers and residents of the parish who have given their lives.
The appearance of the shelter is handsome and dignified, and adds considerably to the appearance of the church. The dedication ceremony will take place- on Sunday afternoon at three o'clock, when the Acting-Minister for Defence, the Hon. J G. Coates, will perform the unveiling ceremony, to be followed bv a memorial service in the. church, which all relative* of the fallen are invited to attend.
