THE PRICES FOR WHEAT.

GREATER PRODUCTION URGED. [BY. TELEGaAPH— COERKSPONDENT.I
CHBISTCHUBCH. ■Wednesday., In opening a meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Farmers' Union to-day the chairman, Mr. D. Jones, M.P., said he thought the Government had- met the farmers in a very fair manner indeed in regard to the price of wheat. They had been given a guaranteed minimum price, and they could get more if the outside markets justified higher prices. "I hope," said Mr. Jones, "that the farmers of Canterbury and of New Zealand will do what is necessary to ensure that, if possible, during the next season sufficient wheat is grown.' I believe there is a feeling in the minds of the farmers \»-day that in the offer that has been made by the Government we have been treated very, fairly* and that they are prepared to grow aH the wheat they can on wheat-growing land. At a period like this, when freights by sea are so difficult to secure, we should do our utmost in endeavouring to grow sufficient wheat for next season's requirements. *
Mr Jones added that he believed some dissatisfaction had existed among farmers m regard to this season's wheat prices but a committee which had gone into the matter had reported favourably concerning the Government s offer. - s
