TWO"* MEN SENT FOR TRIAL. ALLEGED ASSAULT AND ROBBERY. The taking of evidence was concluded at the Police Court yesterday before Mr. J. E. Wilson. S.M., in. the cats* m which two young men, James Edwa?d May and Charles Spittle (Mr. A. Moody), are charged with having robbed John Parker Laurie, an elderly farmer, of Kopia, of £4 15c in money, a watch and chain, a Imife, a. cheque-took, and three telegrams, and in doing so using personal violence. Detective Cummi'ngs gave evidence regarding the arrest of the accused. The accused pleaded not guilty, and were committed to the Supreme Court for trial •' May was also committed for trial oil a charge of stealing a suit-case, valued at £34, belonging to W. & L. Napier, of Devonport. The evidence was to the effect that the suit-case was placed on an express cart on September 4, bat oh arrival at the ferry it was missing. Subsequently it was found at the shop of a Hindoo fruiterer in Ponsonby Road, the Hindoo stating that the accused had left it there. The magistrate sentenced the accused to a term of reformative treatment not exceeding three years. •The doctor states that the accused is of sound mind," th» airsgistrate said, in. referring to George Arthur Thompson, who was charged with. stealing a coat and hat from the Town Hall on January 22, amf was remanded for medical observation. Sub-Inspector Wohlmann said the accused had a long list. The magistrate sentenced the accused to a period rial exceeding two years for reformatory purposes. A charge of stealing a bulldog valued at£2o, the property of Herbert TSJeyworth, was preferred against Alfred Thomas O'Meara (Mr. A: Moody). Evidence was given that the. dog was missed for a month, and when recovered it was in a very emaciated condition. The collar it was then wearing bore the number belonging to a dog O'Meara '.iad when, he lived in Rotorra. The defence was that the dog was obtained from a dealer. The magistrate convicted the accused, arid fined him £10. A seguel to a disagreement among neighbours at Rutland Road, Stanley Bav. was provided in a charge against Reginald Wynne. (Mr. Singer) of using obscene language and assaulting ' Mrs. Emily Melrose Parkes. He was fined £5, the amount being, raised to £6 to allow an anneal to be made. , ( Convicted of stealing a parcel containine 12yds of calico, beloninng to A. B. Masters, Herbert Denver was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon. It was stated that accused took the parcel from the sidecar of a motor-cvcle. A prohibition order against him had just expired, and he undertook to renew it. A charge of assaulting an old man in Wellaslev Street was preferred against Frederick Rosenberg, aged 22, Sub-In-snector Wohlmann said a doctor who wan driving past noticed the aisatilt, and informed a constable. The accused ran away, but was eventually caught in the Domain. He then said the old man had r.sed offent.ive languaee to him. The magistrate imposed a fine of £2. in default 14 days' hard labour.
