Proposed new traffic - regulations were recommended to tho ■ City Council lust evening by the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, S3 the result of observations made by him when abroad recently, lie suggested, pending a statement going more fully into \ details, that " safety zones" fa? passengers boarding or alighting from tram-cars bo intxodasad, and that two bs placed at the top of Symonis Street and another at the terminus ' opposite tho ■ general Post Office. These "iwnea" \rero protected area®, over which wheeled , traffic might; pot'pass at all, and ; within which train passengers might _ safely ' alight from or await cars. This would require a bylaw, 'which, it was recommended, 'bo enacted. s Its terms might be such as would triable the application of. the principle to other parts of . the tramway system within the city,, should it be ' deemed desirable*. In .controlling congested .traffic; are.is in many large cities this scheme had been a great success. - • • ; -'f v ' The' matter "was referred to the committee of the council as a whole.« ...»,h The Motor Garage proprietors' Association of New Zealand wrote submitting. a number of. suggestions for the' regulation of motor traffic for inclusion in any bylaws which the council might make. A derailed report on the suggestions was - received from the city .'traffic inspector. Some of tho proposals were approved by him, and in regard 'to others he stated they were fairly well covered by. the pre* cent by-law.!. .The matter was referred to the Finance' and Legal Committee. : 4 >] !
