THE SHIPPING DISPUTE
COMPLAINT BY OWNERS. . | POSITION OF THE NIAGARA. OFFER MADE TO ENGINEERS. (Received 8.40 p.m.) A. and N.Z SYDNEY, Jan. 6. Tho shipowners complain at the alleged inactivity of the shipping controller in connection with the engineers' trouble. The vessels of the Inter-Stato companies are under his control, and the owners are powerless to make any move towards a settlement unless instructed. ( With a view to getting the Niagara ' away the Union Steam Ship Company,
which is net govern by the controller, he« offered to cohcede the engineers' demands subject to the condition/i made in the final settlement between the controller and the union. The offer has been declined, but negotiations are proceeding.
DEMANDS OF- STEWARDS. NEW PHASE OF THE' TROUBLE. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY, Jan. 6The latest development of the shipping trouble is an ultimatum issued by the Stewards and Pantrymen's Association demanding increases in pay ranging from 22 to 27 js per cent., overtime pay for Sundays and holidays, eight-hour day while at sea and intermediate ports, and six hours while in terminal ports, a month's holiday for the chief steward, and a fortnight for all other ranks on full pay.
