GERMAN PRE-WAR PLOT.
BOMBING OF GIBRALTAR. A. and N.Z. LONDON. Jan. 4.
The Evening Standard discloses a German plot on the eve of the war to cripple Gibraltar with a view to establishing a naval base. It recalls that an aviation exhibition was arranged for, to be held at Malaga on the south coast of Spain, 65 miles north-east of Gibraltar in the summer of 1914, in which Germany displayed great interest. Many aviators were entered ostensibly as competitors, but really in readiness to bomb Gibraltar, co-operating with the Italian and Austrian fleets, which it was expected would quickly Sose of the French fleet. Italy's refusal upset the plans, but anyhow the British learned of Germany a intentions at Malaga.
