TRAMWAY CONDITIONS.
■ : ♦ DEMAND BY FEDERATION. ANOTHER CONFERENCE WANTED. No further development -was reported yesterday in the matter of the demand of the Tramways Federation of New Zealand for a further conference with representatives of the tram-owning authorities of the Dominion on the question of wages and i hours, the time limit named in which has , now expired. If any move is contemplated , in the matter it will come from the Federa- ; tion executive, which has its centre in Wellington. ' The position is that the Auckland City Council is paying the highest rates ruling _ in New Zealand as fixed by the agreement arrived at between the local union and the then Auckland Tramways Co. after the "go-slow" strike of February last, which has a currency of twelve months. The Federation's demands, however, specify still higher rates to be paid as a Dominion award, and so override the local agree- » ment. A conference was held in Weuing- - ton recently, at which a proposal was , made that the southern tram-owners should raise their rates to the level of those ruling . in Auckland, but to this the delegates of the southern proprietaries demurred. The 1 present ultimatum of the Federation is for * another conference to reconsider the situation.
