CHINESE VICTIMISED.
TWO MEN ARRESTED. Allegations of the systematic victimisation of Chinese residents of the city and suburbs have been engaging the attention of the police for some time. Complaints were received by the police that two men representing themselves as dealers have visited various Chinese establishments offering to sell rice and starch at cheap rates. Samples of the commodities were produced for inspection and the goods were to be delivered the day following that upon which the orders were taken. In several instances the unsuspecting - Chinese gave orders for quantities of rice or starch and paid substantial sums on deposit, but the goods were not delivered. In other instances Chinese residents in several of the suburban districts complain of their premises having been entered during their absence, and sums of money aggregating a substantial amount have been missed. Detective De Norville and Plainclothes Constable Meiklejohn during the week-end arrested two men named Cecil Love and George Smith Ormiston and charged them with the offences. The men were brought before the Police Court on Monday and were remanded for a week.
