Shackelford left this.week from Liverpool by the Empress of France, travelling to Vancouver by way of Quebec, New York, Toronto, Chicago, and Salt Lake City. At the beginning of December Mr. and Mrs. Shackelford will join th Makura for Auckland, and hope to be home about the New Year. „ From every point of view Mr. Shackelford says his trip Home has been a great success, and he Aas been pleasantry surprised at the large number of good businessmen who are greatly interested in New Zealand, and who are desirous, as soon as possible, to resume or commence business relations with the Dominion. There are symptoms that certain hide-bound customs are giving way, as they are bound' to do if British trade is to be worth anything. Sir William "Essex is a passenger to New Zealand via New York by the Mauretania, which has left SouthamptonSir Walter has had considerable experience in politics, and has ben active in municipal affairs as- well. His business career has been chiefly associated with the wall-paper printing industry. Lord Islington has left Glynde Place, Glynde, Sussex, where he has been residing for the last two years, and *s returning to his old seat, Hartham Park, Corsham, Wiltshire. Late callers at the High Commissioner's office have included : —.Mr. Shayle Gardner, Parnell; Misses A. Aitken and U. L. Jourdain, Mount Eden; Mrs. G. S. Saunders, Thames; Mr. H. K.
