ACTION AGAINST MEXICO.
DISCUSSION BY SENATE. STRONG MEASURES URGED. CONSULTING THE PRESIDENT. By TelesrraDh— Association —Copyrieht. • (Received 9.30 p.m.) A. and N.Z. WASHINGTON. Dec. 4. In consequence of an admission by Mr. Robert Lansing, Secretary of State, that the State Department had received no reference to the Mexican situation from the President, the Senate appointed a committee to interview Mr. Wilson and to discuss proposed measures. The Washington correspondent*of the New York Times states that it is believed that while the United States insisted in its Note to Mexico that Mr. Jenkins, the arrested Consul, must be released, it is doubtful whether the United States could act quickly in.the event of a refusal by General Carranza., Mr. Wilson's health is expected to interfere with the prosecution of any measures against Mexico. It is pointed out that the United States may, if necessary, blockade Mexico. Mr. G. M. Hitchcock, in the Senate, introduced a resolution to authorise a breach of diplomatic relations with Mexico, enabling the President thenceforth to act at his own discretion. The resolution was referred to the Foreign Relations Committee. Mr. King introduced a resolution to empower the President to use the army and navy to enforce payment by Mexico of claims for damage by American citizens. Mr. Robert Lansing conferred with the Foreign Relations Committee with reference, it is understood, to Mr. Fall's resolution to break off diplomatic relations with Mexico.
