A conference of x local bodies was held here yesterday to consider the question of » main arterial road through 'North Auckland. The Rodney, Otamatea, Hobson, Whangarei, and Mongonui Counties were represented. Mr. R. Coates, chairman of the (Otamatea County Council, presided. The following resolutions were carried — (1) That this conference of North Auckland local bodies has a firm and strong desire for the formation of a main road of concrete or tarred macadam, or other permanent material, from Auckland to Kaipara. (2) This conference is of opinion that it is futUe to expect the various local bodies to agree to a route, and desires the Government to set up a Royal Commission to define the route, and that Messrs. Coates, Cliffe, and McCarroll be elected an executive to carry out the wishes of the conference. (3 )That the commission fix the curves and grades necessary. (4) That the conference make a strong recommendation to the Government to legislate to give local bodies the power to collect rates on native land.
