BUTTER-FAT LEVY.
FURTHER REFUND SOUGHT, CHEESE PRODUCERS' DEMANDS. [B* TELEGRAPH—OWN OOSEESPONDENT.j HAMILTON, v Tuesday. The Government having established s precedent in refunding the butter-fat levy for the last and the present season has emboldened the cheese producers to ask for similar action in regard to the season 1916-17, A meeting of cheese company delegates at Palmerston North recently discussed the matter. It was contended that there was rea'ly more justification for a return of the d fference to producers for the 191617 season, as the Government, at the time, forced the breaking of contracts for lOd and 10£ d, compelling the companies to accept the Government price of 9jd, while deducting a further Jd to pay for the butter-fat levy. A deputation interviewed the Prime Minister on the question, and he said it was too late to do anything this session. The conference decided to make the question an electioneering one, and dairy companies throughout the country are being asked to try and extract a promise from candidates for Parliament to vote for the refund sought. j The matter was discussed at a meeting j of the South Auckland Dairy Association ' at Hamilton yesterday, when it was decided to inferm dairy companies of the desire of the cheese conference.
