THE BUTCHERS' STEIKE.
NO CHANGE IN POSITION.
PROSPECTS OF COMPROMISE.
SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT REPORTED.
The position in regard to the butchers' strike remains unaltered.
Some further negotiations were in progress yesterday on the part of the conciliation commissioner, Mr. T. Harle Giles, in
the hope of again bringing the master butchers and their employees together foi discussion. . At latest advices no definite progress had been made, but there was a slight improvement in the prospects oi eventually achieving a compromise. The most recent development of the strike is a proposal on the part of the Butchers' Union to open a retail shop in the city manned by its own members and directed as to business arrangements by its executive. As yet the matter is at an inchoate state, but it is considered quite possible that the scheme will mature. The sales of. fat stock at Westfield, which in ordinary course would be held to-day, again stand suspended, pending settlement'of the strike.
