KING'S V. GRAMMAR. CHALLENGE MATCH STARTED. ; HEATHCOTE-WILLIAMS SHIELD The challenge match for the Heathcote--1 Williams Shield, between Grammar School, holders, and King's College, was commenced at Eden Park yesterday. The i j weather was fine and the wicket was in good order. King's College made 140 > I runs in their first innings and Grammar ' School 118. When stumps were drawn ' King's College had lost three wickets for , 65 runs. 5 j King's College batted first. Farquhar 5 j and Murray opening the innings. The - I start was not encouraging, for the former ' ; lifted the first ball of the match, de- ' i livered by Burns, to Badeley who held it. I Philips followed and a good stand was , | made, the total being 52, when Murray i was clean bowled by Dunning. Gee filled the vacancy, and a few minutes later he was unfortunately run out without any addition having been made to the score. . Heard, the next batsman, had just . ! reached double figures when he was given i j out leg before to Dunning. I The total was 65 when Keegan went to ! the crease, and he assisted Philips to raise i the score to 79, when he met the same fate .I as his predecessor. Colville followed and vjat93 he was run out. Caughey, the new- ' ' comer, was clean bowled almost imme- ._ diately. Johnston then partnered Philips and runs came more freely, the board l showing 122 when Philips was bowled, i after making 43, which included six boundaries. Cox, who followed, was yorked first ball. Eddowes was the last man in and he assisted Johnston to carry ?_ the score to 140, when the latter was '1 bowled. >> Jaggs and Badeley were the first bats(i men for Grammar School, and the board showed 14 when the former was caught by ' Farquhar. by Johnston. Kelly partnered Badeley, and they carried the score to 90, when the latter was dismissed in a similar manner to the other two batsmen, after making 1 55. Stretton followed, only to be run out two runs later. Dunning then became associated with Kelly and after twelve more runs had been added, Kelly was caught by Caughey. Macklow was the incoming batsman, and the total stood at 114, when he "was bowled by Philips. Burns and Goodacre were similarly dismissed without any further runs being added. Lintott then partnered Dunning, and when two more runs had been obtained he was run out. Bridgeman was the last batsman, and at 113 he was bowled by Heard. Murray and Farquhar commenced the second innings for King's College, and the score was 19 when the former was caught by Burns. Colville then partnered Farquhar, who was batting we'l, and the total was raised to 58, when the latter was dismissed by an off break from Fostles, just a few minutes before the drawing of stumps.
