BRITISH HOUSING SCHEME.

<m t DELAYS IN CONSTRUCTION. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. ! (Reed. 9.40 p.m.) LONDON. Nov. 23. i j Dr. C. Addison, President of the Local Government Board, defending the Government's Housing Schemes I Department, declared that the total !of 47,000 acres now being laid out ■ provided sufficient room for half a i million houses, including tenements. The cost of building and delays through shortage of labour, material I and transport, were blocking the ' schemes. The tenders were too high, and he proposed to ask Parlia- : ment to subsidise builders to the extent of £150 for each house built ; within a certain time. Steps would ! be taken to curtail building of luxurious nouses. Mr. Lloyd George, replying to criticisms, said the shortage of : houses was a contributory cause to I the disquiet and unrest. The shortage was interfering with increased production of food and the mobility of labour. He justified the builders' subsidy because a quick increase in houses was necessary for social stability.
