riYMONDS STREET EN FETE. Preparations are far advanced for the opening ceremony connected with giant electric sign and clock being erected at the top of Symonds Street. The opening takes place on Friday next, the illuminations being etarted by the Hon. A. Myers, M.P., at S p.m. The j Prime Minister had expressed his willingness to perform the ceremony, out his | southern itinerary made this impossible. | Band concerts will form part of the proceedings, and contributors to the sign will present shoppers with free tickets to the Lyric Theatre for the special matinee, which has been fixed for Monday. Every effort has been made to offer an exceptionally interesting programme of pictures, and j free sweets will be given to children. The sign, which is the biggest in New j Zealand, contains nearly 1000 lights in I colours. It. is about 42ft in length and I 30ft high. Ho commanding is it that, be- i sides being easily seen from Karnngahape Road, it is also visible from ships in the I Road, it is also visible from .ships in the harbour. It is expected that Bymonds Street on Friday night will present a I scene of brightness and animation unparalleled in its history.—(Advt.)
