OPERATION AT SEA.
PERFORMED BY AUCKLAND DOCTOR, [from OCR special correspondent.} VANCOUVER. Oct. 14. A surgical operation of some importance, performed by Dr. Florence Keller, late of Auckland, on board the R.M.S. Makura at sea on Tuesday, September 30, undoubtedly saved the life of a passenger, Mrs. Pittara, wife of Mr W. Pittam, formerly of Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. Pittam had undertaken the trip on account of Mrs. Pittam's health, which became worse after leaving Honolulu, necessitating immediate operation. The engineers' messroom was used as an operating theatre, and' all instruments were sterilised in the galley. Dr. Florence and Dr. P. M. Keller are joining the staff of a hospital in California, and had their instruments at hand. The surgeons were able to perform the operation without having the speed of the vessel reduced. Dr. P. M. Keller administered the anaesthetic, and Dr. Florence Keller operated. The operation was entirely successful. The patient responded freely to aftertreatment, and landed at Vancouver in a convalescent stage.- Nursing Sisters Brophv, of Auckland. Clark, of Australia, and Aldridge, late Methodist medical missionary, attended the patient.
