EMIGRANTS TO AUSTRALIA.
«». • HIGH PASSAGE RATES* PROTEST BY AGENTS. , Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON. Oct. 20. ' The Agents .of the Australian States are to meet to-morrow to formulate their cases for submission to Mr. L. C. M. S. Amery, UnderSecretary of State for the Colonies, j against the excessive rate demanded for the conveyance of emigrants. It is understood that the Agents favour the utilisation by the Government of the German steamers trading to ' Australia under the flags of the ConI ference Lines to secure the lowest '• possible rates for emigrants, perhaps in conjunction with the Commonwealth Line. Some resent the Con- . ference Lines basing their passage I tariff on the present-day cost of new tonnage, although in most instances the vessels running in the trade were built at pre-war prices. It is likely that the agents will request Mr. Amery to arrange a conference between their shipping Ministry and the shipowners.
