DEFINITE SETTLEMENT. NO REDUCTION OF AREA. GOVERNOR-GENERAL ACQUIESCES. The fact that the Auckland University College Site Bill had been passed by the House of Representatives and the Legislative Council, and that the area of 3J acres asked for had not been reduced, was referred to at the meeting of the College Council yesterday. j The chairman, Mr. T. W. Leys, said I that a proposal oy the Governor-General, the Kan en Liverpool, that the area to be vested in the council should be reduced by 1 rood 7 perches had been finally considered at a special meeting of the council and the Proiessorial Board that morning. Alter consulting with a repre- j sentativo of the .Survey .Department, and visiting the ground, it was unanimously resolved that the boundaries should remain as provided in the schedule of the Bill, which had already been passed by botli Houses. A message had previously been received from the Governor-General stating his willingness to accept the boundaries described in the Bill, if the council still desired their retention. A telegram announcing the council's decision was sent to the Minister for Education, Sir Francis Bell, and a reply had been received that afternoon, in which the Minister said:—"Your decision, settles the matter definitely." Mr. T. U. Weils moved that the Government be thanked for the satisfactory settlement of the site question, and that the chairman, Mr. Leys, be thanked for his work in connection with the matter. Mr. Wells said it was largely ' due to Mr. Leys' splendid work and personal influence that fbe council had secured a settlement of this long-standing and vexed question. Dr. H. D. Bamford, who seconded the motion, and Professors A. P. W. Thomas and C. W. Egerton paid tributes to the work of the chairman. Reference to the advocacy of the site by the late Dr. W. C. W. McDowell was made by Professor H. W. Segar and the chairman. Mr. Leys said it was a great credit to Dr. McDowell that he stuck to the site in the face of much opposition. The motion was carried.
