General Hertzog,*in the course of his speech at the Nationalist Congress at Bloemfontein, advocating the independence of South Africa, said that the South African Parliament could resolve to thank the King for his services, end declare a republic. What could the King do if the* Nationalists came into power and declared that the republican, minority could rise in rebellion if they wished, on their own responsibility 1

Before closing, the Nationalist Congress adopted General Hertzog's motion that the Union Government's contribution towards the maintenance of the navy be discontinued.
