THEFT OF SOLDIER'S KIT.
PROBATION AND RESTITUTION
Charles Tuatara (Mr. Osborne Lilly), a young Maori, appeared for sentence on a charge of the theft of a soldier's kit. Counsel explained that the prisoner, who bad just returned from active service, had lost his own kit, and had taken one- belonging to another returned man. He said that the prisoner, had been admitted to probation at Hamilton for the theft of a military overcoat, which was taken by the prisoner together with the remainder of the soldier's* kit. He suggested that a term of probation would meet the present offence. The prisoner had a considerable amount of back pay coming to him, as well as his gratuity, and was prepared to make restitution for the articles he had. taken.
His Honor admitted the prisoner to probation for two years, and ordered him to pay £30 to the owner of the stolen kit. He was also ordered to pay £2 19s, the costs of the prosecution.
