TRAINING BOYS AND STOKERS
NAVAL DEPOT AT WELLINGTON
Proposals regarding the training of boys for the navy are made by Lord .fellicoe in hit- report to the Government.
'■ In order to provide accommodation for the training of boys and stokers on entry." says the report, "' it is recommended that H..M.S. Philomel should be fitted out as a stationary training establishment, accommodation being provided lor the following, in addition to the instructional and ship's staff, viz., 100 to T2O boys. 50 stokers. For purposes of I: .lining the Philomel should be provided with an armament comprising one &in B.L bun, Mink VII. or -later; one 4in y.K. gun. Mark IV. or V. ; two 12pouiioer QK. guns. Two of the guns to be. lit ted with laying teachers, and a 6in, ,-i 4in, and 12 pounder loader to be provided. One modern-type searchlight also to be installed. " Wellington is recommended as being the mo.-t suitable and central port it ■?.';;. Ii the Philomel should be stationed, while the officers an- employed on duties .it the Navy Office. At'a later period it may be -able to move her t<> Queen i hailotte Sound or Pelorus > .iitui. when- the climate and surround.ing- are. more suitable. While the ship is at Wellington she should he moored in a, position which would keep the bovs under training deal of the city, while affordii. opportunities for recreation.
