COMMONWEALTH SHIPS.
<3» MERCHANTS' OPPOSITION. LONDON, Oct. 6. Commenting on the Australasian Merchants Association's unanimous resolution condemning the Commonwealth's steamship enterprise, the shipping correspondent of the Times states that the shipping companies are disturbed by the prospects of the competition of Mr. Hughes' large cargo vessels, whilst merchants feel that they have no guarantee that the Commonwealth later on will not enter the general trade. There is a strong feeling in business circles against the Commonwealth's trading schemes.
