THE CAUDFIELD CUP.

BY. PHAETOK. The 40th contest for the Caulfield Cup i* fixed for to-day, and appearances point to a good field lining up at the poet. It is a popular opinion that ox all the leading Australian events the Caulfield Cup is one of the most difficult to win, and the number of hot favourites that went down quite regularly for such a long stretch of years extending from 1884 "to 1906 provide some highly-aensa-tionai reading. However, from the fact that the actual first favourite has won the Caulßeld Cupjjn five occasions within the last nine years, backers of that particular division are encouraged to keep up a stronger heart than was the case when the popular candidates regularly went down. _ Night Watch having won the Caulfield Stakes at weight-for-age, he hats placed himself further in the limelight, and it looks as though he will be singled out for special favouritism. A victory in the Caulfield Stakes does not necessarily mean a Caulfield Cup victory, and the records show that several sensational failures have been entered up against winners of the first-named race when they have contested the Cup. However, the fact of Night Watch holding a staying certificate is to be viewed as a powerful factor, and his prospects arc entitled to be viewed in a hopeful vein, for with Bst 111b he has an impost 41b under weight-for-age. Should Night Watch lead the field home to-day, such will constitute a highly-interesting incident, for in the race of 19*01 his dam, Wakeful, ran the winner, Hymettus, to half a head for first honours. A lightweight that may prove a severe thorn !in the side of Night Watch in the ! settlement of to-day's race is Ard-na-ree, d four year old son of St. Alwyne and the j Abercorn mare, Collarene, who has the ; handy impost of 7st 31b opposite i his name. ! For the second year in succession Sir | George Clifford furnished the winner of the Dunedin Guineas with a co't bred privately at the Stonyhurst Stud. The leading lines in the pedigree of this year's winner of the Dunedin Guineas read as follow :— ROYAL STAG. Sire: Autumnus, by Treadmill (eon of Bill of Portland) from Goldleai, by Stonyhurst (son of King of Clubs) from Golden * Crest, by Apremont (son of Mortemer). Dam: Kirriemuir, by Clanr«naJ,d (son of St. Lcser) from Madowla, by Trenton (son of Musket) from Asa-lea, by G&Hiard (son of Galopin). The St. Simon family, through Comedy King, St. Alwyne, and St. Anton, placed themselves in marked prominence at Caulfield on Saturday last. Comedy King, who was got by Persimmon (son of St. Simon), claimed Queen Comedy (winner of the tola Welter Handicap) and Artilleryman (winner of the Caulfield Guineas); Sea Prince (by Persimmon) was responsible for Stephanotic (winner of the Debutante Stakes) ; St. Awyne, who is by St. Frusquin (son of St. Simon) begat Night Watch (winner of the Caulfield" Stakes), while St. Anton (by St. Frusquin) claimed St. Mira (winner of the Toorak Handicap). An interesting incident associated with the Dunedin Guineas this year is that Royal Stag and Mustard Pot both trace to St. Simon. Autumnus, the sir of Royal Stag, was got bv Treadmill (son of Bill of Portland, bv St Simon), while Mustard Pot was got by General Latour (son of Soult, by St. Simon). Mr. W. H. Paterson has sold the stallion Monoform to Mr. A. Fen ton, of Te Poke, where the horse will be stationed this season.

NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. Thrace, who joined the active brigade some little time back after a spell of a I couple of months, is coming on nicely. Ihe Australian gelding looks bright in his coat, and is also quite muscular. It is considered likely that Thrace will be given a further opportunity to distinguish himself in flat events before resinning hurdle-racing. Wollomai is furnishing into a nice juvenile of late, and has shown sufficient pace to be worthy of perseverance on the" part of his owners, who have not experienced very profitable times on the turf since Tripoli and Kitty Bellairs won them stake-money. It was pleasing to note ; Clonmel carry their colours home in first place at the Whangarei meeting. ! A well-known Auckland owner who ! visited Randwick for the spring meeting I is reported to have been a good winner j over the success of British Arch on the | final day of the A.J.(J. meeting. Marconi and Lady Eiysian are now working under the * supervision of A. NeaJe, who saw service at the front, and who, prior to the war, had many winners through his hands in the other end of the North Island. Aberbrothock was one who won many races when trained by Neale. The fact that H. Robinson is likely to ride Sasanof in the Melbourne Cup is not likely to tell against that horse's prospects, for Robinson is recognised as a very capable horseman. However, Sasanof's recent form hardly suggests him as a probable victor with his welter impost. Marconi appears to be standing up to his work safely, and is hitting out soundly at headquarters. He may come back to form sufficiently good to earn something towards his upkeep among tho hurdle class in this district. It is stated that Risingham, who showed promising form last season, has been purchased by an Auckland sportsman, and that he will probably join a local stable shortly. The Trentham horse should be easy to place to a profit round the Auckland country meetings. Munster, who has recently been taken up again after a spell in the paddock, was among those exercised at headquarters on Thursday. He is a little above himself in condition, but should soon be turned into racing shape. The Sybarite Mist . juvenile.. which accompanied Some Boy ana lvublai Khan from Australia, is at present in light work under F. Gilchrist. This youngster is a little on the small side as yet, being a late foal. He will race as a gelding, and is not to be hurried. _ Comedy Prince has not been overtaxed since resuming regular work. His task on Thursday last was of the light order on the tan track. The Comedy King gelding is looking healthy. A. Julian's team are all doing nicely, including Jocular, Pablo, All Talk, War Tank, Flowing Bowl, and the hali-sister to Tenacious. Pablo, the hunter, hit out well on the sand last Thursday. F. Tutchen is due to complete engagements, at Gisborne this month. One of his mounts will be Hexton, a member of Hickey's stable. The Quin Abbey Fuss representative in Conway's charge is beginning to get into racing shape. One of the most attractive juveniles at headquarters is the chestnut half-brother to Jack Delaval in F. Stenning's charge. This youngster is by Robert the Bruce from Miss Jack, and on appearances certainly is a good advertisement for the Scottish King horse. Big Corn has been schooled recently, and may make good later. He is a member of Eva's stable, • which also i shelters Utu, the half-sister (by toylvite) to Surplus. Swastika, the disappointing hunter, who failed to earn better than second honours, is no longer an inmate of Eva's stable. Blue and Black appears to have thrived ! well on the Whangarei trip, but found the class he was pitted against a shade too good. The chestnut can still muster up some pace for a few furlongs, but is getting along in years. Dead Sweet, E. Pope's newcomer, has come in for pleasing reference since arrival here. Tabasco has not been overtaxed of late, but appears to be in good health. Miss Muriel was noticed sprinting on the juvenile track last Thursday, and moved freely. Hineamaru, Some Boy, and Crowhurst are among those worked before the breaklist hour.
