SUPPLY OF DOCTORS.
A POPULAR PROFESSION. LARGE NUMBER OF STUDENTS DEMAND MAY BE EXCEEDEa [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DUXEDIN, Thursday. The question as to whether the number of students coming forward for the medical profession in New Zealand is greater than will be required for the service <-.f the community is a matter to which parents of youths and the youths themselves should give serious cons, deration As a matter of fact there appear: t., he a feeling among fully qualified medical men that the profession in New Z- iland is likely to -be overdone. Moreover, there seems to be some reason for this opinion At the present time there are 301 me di cal students attending the Outgo Uraver" sity, and 37 of them will sit fur their final examination early next year, it shouiH be remembered also that "medics! students are coming forward in ci eater numbers than was the case five years ago. The fact that there" was a call f OP students at the outbreak of war. wi-en it was thought that there might ultimately be a shortage of doctors, is no doubt primarily responsible for the present' pronounced popularity of medicine, as a profession. " The question whether dentistry or school teaching would not be more suitable for youths as the position now stands might be worthy of investigation. At any rate medical students of the Otaeo University realise that their examinations in the immediate future are to be tightened up.
